MFL News

We have recently subscribed to the internet site www.atantot.com.  This is an interactive site embracing French, Italian, German and Spanish at all the key stages in primary and secondary school; importantly the site licence enables children to access it at home:

You should have been given a username and password in a recent newsletter. If not then please contact the school office and they will help you.

Simply select the language of choice then proceed to the relevant key stage – for our pupils KS2 is most appropriate.  Songs, number exercises and the alphabet are also available.  Click on S/P on the first page to access some excellent games.

Please access this site as an extension, for independent study or simply to have fun!

Curriculum Area Details: MFL

Modern Foreign Languages are well established at Mayfield and will become mandatory at KS2 in all primary schools from 2010 onwards.  From Foundation Stage to year 4 children are taught Italian in half hour weekly sessions by an Italian teacher.  In years 5 and 6 children have hourly lessons in French each week delivered by a qualified language teacher.  Emphasis is placed on listening and speaking skills but reading and writing are also introduced.  We use “Early Start Languages” as our core text and follow the KS2 Programme of Study.  Children are formally assessed annually using The Languages Ladder, a national system which is designed to support life-long learning.
