I.C.T (Information & Communication Technology)

Our ICT Vision
Information and communication technology (ICT) is developing all the time and rapidly changing the way we live our lives. The ability to use current technologies effectively and to apply these experiences to future technologies is therefore a vital life skill in modern society. At Mayfield Primary School we recognise the growth in ICT and the importance of staying abreast of change and advancement. We understand the significance of ICT within all aspects of teaching, learning, management and administration and therefore the need for staff, pupils and parents to be confident, responsible and effective users of ICT. At Mayfield we see ICT as a means of providing a personalised and flexible learning experiences; of supporting staff in their teaching, managerial and/or administrative responsibilities and establishing relationships and communications with parents, other schools, the local authority and children’s services.

The ICT curriculum
The ICT curriculum is taught by way of The Progression in ICT Capability Materials’ recently produced by Cambridgeshire ICT Service. Children develop their skills, knowledge and understanding within six ICT themes: Data handling; Research; Control and Sensing; Modelling and Simulation; Presenting Ideas and Communicating with Others. These skills are used, developed and reinforced as an integral part of all other curriculum areas.

ICT resources
At Mayfield the staff and children have access to wide range of software that supports the Progression in ICT Capability Statements, as well as STARZ; a safe, online learning platform for children produced by Cambridgeshire ICT Service.

Every class has timetabled access to two laptops trolleys each containing 16 laptops which can be connected to the wireless school network, as well as the ICT suite containing 15 networked desktops PCs and an interactive whiteboard. Each classroom is equipped with an interactive whiteboard (infants) or a laptop projector (juniors), 1 desktop PC and a CD player.

Children also have the use of 15 ‘Tuff-Cams’ that enable them capture digital images, short videos, sound bytes and stop frame animation. A digital microscope, data loggers and floor robots are also available to support scientific and mathematical investigation.

  Children, the internet and safety

In school we have clear and well controlled guidelines about e-safety that relates to children using modern technologies. The following websites provide information, top tips, downloadable leaflets and posters and even games they can play with their children.
